Venous lake
Venous lake
Venous lake can occur at any age but is more common in middle-aged and elderly individuals on exposed areas of the skin and mucous membranes, such as the head, neck, and lips. The lesions appear as deep blue to black papules, sometimes resembling blood blisters. The pathological changes of this condition are not true vascular tumors but rather dilated veins. In the superficial dermis, highly dilated vascular spaces filled with red blood cells can be observed, with the vessel walls composed of a single layer of endothelial cells and a thin layer of fibrous tissue. The surrounding dermis often shows marked age-related changes in elastic fibers.
This condition responds well to long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser treatment, but continuous laser therapy may lead to scarring.
